In response to Linder: Danger Came Smiling at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea-based artists Vivian Ross-Smith and Holly Slingsby are curating a weekend of live performance and video works in the gallery.

Commencing on 20 November and running until 23 November, the programme will include live works by SGÔR, John Walter, Vivian Ross-Smith + Esyllt Angharad Lewis and Holly Slingsby. Performative moving image works will also be shown throughout the weekend, comprising works from invited artists and an open call, including Adele Vye, Aled Simons, Alex Hetherington, Bhebhe & Davies, Jenny Baines, Jessa Mockridge, Rebecca Moss, Sophie Lindsey, Quilla Constance and Zia Torta.

Linder: Danger Came Smiling has toured from London’s Hayward Gallery to Glynn Vivian, via Edinburgh. Swansea Performance Weekend’s programme expands and brings alive themes from the Linder’s exhibition including consumption, domesticity, gender performativity, mass media, bodies, archetypal figures and pleasure.

A text responding to the weekend’s programme will be written by curator and writer Kit Edwards to expand the project’s reach.

Artist-Curator Vivian Ross-Smith reflected on the importance of this weekend, saying “We are inspired by the rich history and legacy of performance art in Swansea and want to build on this to make high-quality art accessible to audiences here. This will enrich the cultural offering in the city, highlight Swansea as a destination for ambitious and experimental performance art, and make the themes of the Linder exhibition come alive for audiences.”

Artist-Curator Holly Slingsby stated “The programme platforms local and national artists who work with live-ness. With invaluable funding from Arts Council Wales, we have created new commissions to invest in artists to produce and present high quality work with a clear artistic vision to respond to Linder’s influential oeuvre.

Glynn Vivian’s Katy Freer says “Swansea Performance Weekend is a celebration of bold, boundary-pushing live art and performance to camera that resonates deeply with Linder’s expanded practice. Her work challenges conventions across disciplines —whether through collage, choreography, or sound—and this weekend offers a dynamic platform for artists to do just that: to experiment, provoke, and connect with audiences in unexpected ways. It’s also fantastic to be working with Holly Slingsby and Vivian Ross-Smith, who have curated such a wonderful programme.

This programme is supported by Arts Council Wales Create funding.
